Latest Travel Update UK VISA 2021 | COVID-19
Recently, the Omicron variant of COVID-19 was detected in Southern Africa. It is reported that the virus has spread to over 12 countries and has caused uncertainty related to future travel plans of Students and Visa aspirants alike, especially for the UK.
After detecting the Omicron variant, EU countries red-listed and banned travelers from several Southern African countries. Since then, the UK and the USA have similarly restricted travel from these countries by imposing hotel quarantine for passengers.
These countries include:
- South Africa
Fortunately, travelers from South Asian countries such as India have not been affected by the Omicron variant and are not on the UK red list.
Travelers from non-red list countries such as India have to follow new rules; this includes a COVID RT-PCR test no more than 72 hours before traveling to the UK.
According to the new rules, a COVID Test is required before arriving in the UK, and the COVID test must be done within 72 hours before arrival. On arrival, the passenger is required to take a COVID test before the end of day 2 of their arrival and self-isolate until their test results are released, and the COVID tests can be done with Home PCR test kits from private providers (such as Dante Labs inc.) in the UK which must be booked before leaving. It is recommended that unvaccinated or partially vaccinated passengers do the Day 2 & Day 8 PCR test kit. They must quarantine at the address provided in the passenger locator form for ten days until then.
Alternatively, the fully vaccinated passengers have to follow different rules, and they are required to take a COVID PCR Test before Day 2 of the arrival. If the result is negative, they can immediately leave quarantine. If the passenger tests positive, they can observe a quarantine period of 10 days. Please note that you may need to provide proof of vaccination with a vaccine certificate. It must be presented to relevant authorities at the airport upon arrival. The Lateral flow test available earlier is a no longer viable option for passengers coming to the UK.
Besides COVID testing regulation, masks are now mandatory in public spaces like universities, shops, public transports. Any students going to the UK must make sure they follow local guidelines for masking where their respective universities are located.
If a traveler gets infected in the UK after the mandatory quarantine period, they must observe self-isolation for ten days. Please ensure when you get to the UK or anywhere else that you keep hygiene and wash hands regularly, carry a hand sanitizer when out of home and avoid crowded spaces if necessary.
